A 20-year-old Fond du Lac man has been arrested for allegedly causing serious injuries to a 2-year-old girl.
At about 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Fond du Lac paramedics and officers from Oshkosh and Sheboygan police departments responded to a report of a child having trouble breathing, said Lt. Cameron McGee of the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department detective bureau.
Departments from across Wisconsin were covering for Fond du Lac officers Saturday while they attended the funeral of slain officer Craig Birkholz in Kenosha.
"On-scene paramedics were concerned that the child may have received a serious head injury," McGee said.
The girl was flown to American Family Children's Hospital in Madison where she was listed in critical condition at 1 p.m. Monday, said McGee.
McGee referred to the injuries as consistent with "shaken baby syndrome."
Detectives from the Sheriff's Department investigated the incident and arrested a 20-year-old man on one count of felony physical abuse of a child.
Fond du Lac Police Department Deputy Chief Kevin Lemke said the case is in the hands of the Sheriff's Department. However, the Police Department will receive updates about the incident.
The suspect did not appear Monday in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court.
He also has a pending stalking case.
On Sept. 30, 2010, police responded to a West Scott Street business where the 20-year-old was allegedly on top of the caller's vehicle, according to the criminal complaint.
The woman said she and the man had broken up after she found out he was cheating on her. He continued to try to contact her, leaving 30 voicemails on her phone in one night, according to the complaint.
The woman parked her car at Lakeside Park near the pavilion, and later found the 20-year-old lying in the backseat of her car with her iPod, ID and other items, according to the complaint.
When he exited the car, the woman locked the doors. He is accused of climbing onto the hood.
About five days earlier, officers took the man into protective custody after he was located on top of the Macy Street parking ramp.
The 20-year-old is the second area man in four months accused of severely injuring a child.
Tyler J. Jackson, 23, was charged Dec. 27 with first-degree reckless homicide.
Jackson allegedly injured his girlfriend's daughter, Chloe Gessner, the morning of Dec. 21, 2010, according to the complaint
Dr. Alice Swenson of the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee told police that Chloe's head injury was one of, if not the worst, case of brain damage she has ever seen, according to the complaint.
Gessner died at the hospital.
Jackson is free after posting $200,000.
Jackson has a motion hearing scheduled May 3.
