Westport police said today they have arrested two foster parents following a call last July involving a 6-month-old baby suspected of suffering from “shaken baby syndrome.”
Three other foster children were immediately removed from the residence by officials from the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF), police said.
The couple, identified as Debbie DeCarvalho, 42, and Mario Leone, 38, turned themselves into police on Wednesday after learning of warrants for their arrest, a police news release said.
Both were charged with assault and risk of injury to a minor and bond set at $50,000 each for a court appearance on Jan. 28, police said.
Police said officers responded to a medical call and the infant was transported to Norwalk Hospital “where doctors suspected shaken baby syndrome.” The infant was immediately transferred to Westchester Medical Center due to the severity of its injuries, police said.
Investigators from DCF, the State Attorney’s Office, and the Westport Police Department conducted a joint investigation into the manner in which the infant was injured, police said, and the warrants were issued.
