A grand jury on Tuesday indicted a Virginia Beach man on a capital murder charge in connection with the death of a 4-month-old girl.
Micah Patterson, 22, also faces charges of second-degree murder, object sexual penetration and child abuse, according to a news release from the commonwealth's attorney.
Patterson was babysitting the infant on Jan. 10, the child's mother, Samantha Murawski, testified in Circuit Court. She said she noticed thumb-size bruises on the baby's hips. The baby began vomiting and was taken to the hospital, where she died the next day, Murawski said.
Police arrested Patterson on Jan. 11, and he was charged with felony child abuse. Prosecutors in May said that an autopsy determined that the baby, Aubrey Hannsz, had died of abusive head trauma consistent with shaken-baby syndrome.
