A 24-year-old city man faces up to seven years in prison after he pleaded guilty Wednesday to reckless assault of a child for injuries he inflicted on an 8-month old baby.
Randy Johnson of Walnut Street was arrested after a city police investigation in September. Police were contacted after the child was taken to Women and Children’s Hospital in Buffalo after it began suffering from seizures and had injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome.Johnson had been charged with three counts of reckless assault. The case was never presented to a grand jury. Johnson instead waived his right to a grand jury presentation and pleaded to a single count. The child is Johnson’s live-in girlfriend’s. Police at the time of the arrest said she was not aware of what happened. Johnson told police in a statement that he did not intend to harm the child but said the injuries may have happened when he pulled the child from a crib and possibly when Johnson was playing with the boy. Johnson is well known to police, having an extensive criminal history.
