June 6 2011A New York City man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison in the death of his infant son from shaken baby syndrome.
Twenty-five-year-old Saul Cortez of Queens was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter last month. Prosecutors said he repeatedly shook and punched the crying 8-month-old last year.
Prosecutors said that Cortez's wife returned home to find the baby unresponsive, limp and not breathing.
The little boy, named Mario, suffered a brain injury, lacerated liver and rib fractures. He was diagnosed with shaken baby syndrome at a hospital and died less than two weeks later.
Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown called the case a grim reminder that babies should never be shaken.
