A judge granted bond for a 24-year-old woman accused of severely shaking her infant daughter, causing skull and rib fractures.
Vonya B. Cataulin has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding against her 2-month-old daughter.
Circuit Judge Louis Sherman granted $10,000 bond on Tuesday and banned Cataulin from having any contact with her two young children. Prosecutor Jill Harris argued in court that Cataulin should be held because the injuries were serious, including seven broken ribs and a fractured skull. A doctor found the injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome, Harris said.
Defense attorney Emily Munn said Cataulin had no previous criminal record and posed no threat to the community. Munn said her client has a history of mental illness.
Cataulin told investigators that she pressed on the baby’s chest to relieve gas, according to a search warrant. She also tripped over the car seat, where the child slept, which caused her daughter to fall and hit her head on the floor, the warrant said.
The child is in foster care, and a family member has custody of an older son, Harris said. A trial has been scheduled for May.
