SBS: Queens, in grave condition

SOUTH JAMAICA, N.Y. (WPIX) — A Queens mom is in police custody after she allegedly shook her 7-month-old baby -- nearly killing the infant -- just to make her stop crying, PIX 11 News has learned.Authorities say the incident occurred Saturday night while Nyemah Nickens, 20, was staying overnight at her boyfriend's South Jamaica home. After Nyla reportedly cried for nearly a half-hour in the middle of the night, authorities say Nickens picked her child up and shook the baby until it appeared she had fallen asleep. The following morning, Nickens checked in on Nyla around 5 a.m. and noticed the infant was still on one side and had a swollen eye, according to prosecutors. According to reports, her boyfriend's mother called for help upon hearing the news.Nyla was listed in grave condition Wednesday and doctors said it was not likely she would survive due to the severe extent of her injuries. So far, Nickens has been charged with assault. However, Prosecutors claim if the child dies, Nickens' charges would be upgraded to murder.NickenS was held without bail and is expected to return to Queens Supreme Court on Sept. 20.
